Ã I always make it a point not to hurt the feelings of other people and, therefore, I regulate my moods and emotions so as to make others feel happy and comfortable in my company and to avoid any negative impact on them. I feel responsible for my actions and this sense of onus has always made me take the responsibility for my mistakes. Therefore, I take extra precaution to ensure that my words or actions, in no way, come into the conflict with the feelings of others and their emotions. Ã For example, if I am in a company of a religious minority, and someone makes a joke about them, I do not laugh at the joke. Instead, I also make an attempt to dissuade such people from making such jokes. This way, I attempt to avoid such situations without hurting the feeling of both parties.

Pre-1914 prose study Essay It reminds the reader that it is a gothic story. The last story called, The Superstitious Mans Story isnt what is described to be typically gothic, however, and it does include gothic elements. This story isnt typically gothic because it doesnt definitely have murders or doppelgangers; the story just persuades the reader to assume that those things are the solution to the story. This is clear because in the story when the villagers say that they had seen the man, they could have been mistaken. Thomas Hardy only uses one technique in the story which is a simile. The simile is, sleeping as sound as a rock. He uses this simile to show that there was no sign as movement so there is no real proof he was there. In The Red Room, H. G Wells uses the techniques repetition to convince the reader that there is something significant of that room. He uses personification, for example when he describes the shadow to be mocking the characters action so that the reader can imagine that in the room it feels like youre being followed. He uses an effective setting in the red room with dark, daunting colours. Finally he uses metaphors and similes to help the reader picture the room as he describes it. In Confession Found in a Prison, Charles Dickens uses similes and metaphors to emphasise the mans feelings, he used personification to describe his feelings of guilt and regret when he says that the wind that passes whispers murder to him. He also uses an effective setting when he describes the dungeon that the character is present in when he was writing the story. In Thomas Hardys A Superstitious Mans Story, Hardy uses just a simile to prove to the reader that there is a possibility that the man might not have been there because there was no sign that the man was there. In my opinion, I found The red Room the most effective story because the techniques used such as the similes and metaphors really helped me imagine the picture and the scene the story was describing. Also it used many other techniques like the setting described and personification that made me feel suspense and exhilaration whilst reading the story. It also had the best storyline because it had a secret history of murders and deaths that were not exposed; they were just hinted when the old people were warning him of the red room and its effects it has on people. It also has two sides to the story; it has a supernatural side because of the history and noises and shadows that couldnt be explained. The second side is the realistic side when he gets out of the castle and he realises that it wasnt ghosts or spirits in the room that were making him uncomfortable but it was just his mind playing tricks on him.

Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du Bois :: Fighting for Civil Rights
Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois were very important African American leaders in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They both felt strongly that African Americans should not be treated unequally in terms of education and civil rights. They had strong beliefs that education was important for the African American community and stressed that educating African Americans would lead them into obtaining government positions, possibly resulting in social change. Although Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois had similar goals to achieve racial equality in the United States, they had strongly opposing approaches in improving the lives of the black population. Washington was a conservative activist who felt that the subordination to white leaders was crucial for African Americans in becoming successful and gaining political power. On the other hand, Du Bois took a radical approach and voiced his opinion through public literature and protest, m aking it clear that racial discrimination and segregation were intolerable. The opposing ideas of these African American leaders are illustrated in Du Boisââ¬â¢ short story, ââ¬Å"Of the Coming of Johnâ⬠, where Du Bois implies his opposition to Washingtonââ¬â¢s ideas. He shows that the subordination of educated black individuals does not result in gaining respect or equality from the white community. In fact, he suggests that subordination would lead the black community to be further oppressed by whites. However contrasting their views might have been, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois were significant influential black leaders of their time, who changed the role of the black community in America. à à à à à à à à à à à Booker T. Washingtonââ¬â¢s ideologies for economic advancement and self-help played a major role in his approach to fight for equal rights. By founding the Tuskegee Institute in Mound Bayou, he created a university that was segregated for black students and encouraged higher educational standards (Meier 396). These students were also encouraged to follow the social system of segregation in order to achieve political status in the United States. In an interview with reporter Ralph McGill, Du Bois recalls that in the process of obtaining funds for the Tuskegee Institute ââ¬Å"Washington would promise [white philanthropists] happy contented labor for their new enterprises. He reminded them there would be no strikersâ⬠(Du Bois, qtd. in McGill 5). This shows the nature of Washingtonââ¬â¢s contradicting approach in obtaining political power by embracing the system of segregation and working with white leaders rather than against the m to achieve his goals.

The Levi Strauss 501 advertising campaign was so successful in 1984-1990 as it attracted the typical American teens selling independence, sexuality and physical good looks, representing the perfect figure and body. It illustrated a complete lifestyle to the teenagers world. Admiring the fantasy of idols James Dean and Marlon Brando, all connecting to the Levi guys (jeans) in the adverts, giving the impression of a sensual, healthy radiant aspect, to the gazed audience. Falling for the act, teens still continued to buy the different types of jeans, whilst new ideas were being designed. People realise now it was just a pretence illusion. Although these shams still occur in adverts today. In the advert ââ¬ËThe Launderetteââ¬â¢, it begins straight away with music, then a view of a Korean soldier standing outside, indicating the war had just ended. Heââ¬â¢s put there as a parallel to the Levi guy, heââ¬â¢s not as laid back! At first the camera doesnââ¬â¢t focus on the Levi guyââ¬â¢s face, giving mystery and intrigue to the viewers. Entering into the steamy launderette, everyone turns and stares. Staring is the usual old, slob-like husband, one hand holds a cigar, whilst in the other sits a beefy, dripping hamburger! Noticing his entry, the Levi guy slyly removes his cool sunglasses, revealing his smiling face. With the dark, slick back hair, a dream to every girl. Dull lighting among the other customers symbolizing their shallow lives, whilst innocently he places his clothes into the machine . Unusually he puts stones into the machine along with his clothes, thinking nothing of the matter. Glaring at him is the average housewife with her children observing closely. Sliding his jeans off, there is a close up on his backside- revealing the one and only red Levi tab, showing they are nicely fitted, encouraging the opposite sex. Steam evaporates around him, sexuality diffuses in the area. Red, white and blue colours surround the launderette corresponding to the American flag- the jeans belong to America! All attention on him, he turns round in white boxer shorts, attracting people to buy them and causing his brown, toned body to glisten. Typical, normal girls, giggle together, as he sits down in the middle of the waiting seats. Above him a bright orange border encloses him. Expressing his delightful, healthy life. ... ... always zoomed in on. Typical American items are benefited. Like the leather and denim jackets are repeated. Golden, happy endings diffuse into the sunset. Skyscrapers tend to appear in the background. Steam is generated by the large amount of heat and passion in the ads. At the end of all advertisements, a slogan is concluded. For example ââ¬ËThe Pick upsââ¬â¢ one is ââ¬Ëseparate the man from the boysââ¬â¢. Relating to the story. Also the Levi tab is expressed every time. It is the trademark of the jeans. The adverts were only shown in the U.K, they were not performed in the U.S.A. The U.K is continually blasted by Americas products and images. The T.V media continues to blitz our minds. In the adverts, people donââ¬â¢t analyse the visual images with a critical, impartial eye. So they will remain to carry on believing the false acts, and buying the products. Advertisements should not be held back though as then no industry would have a boost in making money from the publicity, so then no company could afford to make quality merchandise. The Levi campaign was so successful then but not as much now, to what it was. It managed to succeed in making jeans a fashion statement (which they still are).

Compare Ch 1 & 2 of Hard Times to Ch 6 of Jane Eyre
Both authors Charlotte Bronte and Charles Dickens give determined attention to the bleak and hard aspects of life and, specifically, to the life of children. In the Chapters 1 & 2 of Hard Times to Chapter 6 of Jane Eyre, they vividly portray difficulties and hardship faced by many poor children at school. Thesis The chapters under analysis are based on similar settings and themes portraying educational system of the Victorian era, attitude towards children and their role in society.In the chapters under analysis, the authors portray school life of the protagonists and their grievances. ââ¬ËFact and Figuresââ¬â¢ dominate in the chapters underlining the role of cramming in education. In Hard Times, in the opening scene in ââ¬Ëa plain, bare, monotonous vault of a schoolroom', the dominant adjectives are ââ¬Ësquare, hard, dryââ¬â¢, and the first paragraph of Chapter 2 emphasizes this theme by using many of the declaratory titles which Dickens had contemplated giving to thi s novel. T.Gradgrind teaches children:ââ¬ËA man who proceeds upon the principle that two and two are four, and nothing over, and who is not to be talked into allowing for anything overâ⬠(Dickens). In Jane Eyre, girls follow strict rules during classes: ââ¬Å"there were sundry questions about tonnage and poundage and ship-money, which most of them appeared unable to answerâ⬠(Bronte). Another important detail is that girls should read the Bible every morning which dictated social norms and social order.In the chapters under analysis, the authors create a similar prototypes of teachers and educational systems typical for their times. As the first passage makes clear, the Gradgrind educational system and the ethos of the industrial town are at one in being designedly quite rightly if ââ¬ËThe Gradgrind Philosophy' is accepted ââ¬â monotonous, and in embodying an aridly limited sense of life's possibilities and priorities. Jane comments: ââ¬Å"it seems disgraceful to be flogged, and to be sent to stand in the middle of a room full of peopleâ⬠(Bronte). A doctrine of Christian endurance is similar in the chapters. Both authors pay a special attention to the process itself and organization of education. They underline that educational process should be based on daily activities and planning process.The chapters though starting in a schoolroom are concerned with more than education but growing up and new perception of the world. Success for the protagonists means fight in whatever direcà ¬tion. To the attainment of any end worth living for, a symmetrical sacrifice of their nature is compulsory upon children. Jane comments: ââ¬Å"I could not comprehend this doctrine of end urance; and still less could I understand or sympathize with the forbearance she expressed for her chastiserâ⬠(Bronte).Pressure of schooling and severe attitude of their tutors forces the children to mature and understand the role of religion and schooling in their life. The children speak as mature adults which unveils their independent thinking and mature personalities. Readers quickly sense the inevitability of the children's movement towards savagery, though the authors relate the novels with such economy and intensity that its predictability does not become monotonous. In these chapters, both children assume leadership for their calm rationality.ââ¬Å"Only a few feeble stragglers said Yes: among them Sissy Jupeâ⬠(Dickens). In the chapters, both authors use characters of children in opposition to the main characters. This technique helps them to underline the importance of liberation in the world of cruelty and misunderstanding. In sum, Charlotte Bronte and Charles Dickens portray that suffering is undergone in order to expand the human spirit, to delve into matters previously kept hidden, to grow through pain. They grow up into small adults emulating the ââ¬Ëreal' world they have left behind and to which eventually they return.

In the Great Gatsby, the descriptions of the Eggs, the ââ¬Å"valley of ashesâ⬠, Gatsby, and the Buchanans all convey the judgment that the upper class of the society are shallow, empty and hollow and therefore, lacking morals and ethics and because of this, that the American dream has failed as citizens have become obsessed with the material aspect of the American dream rather than the spiritual aspect. Firstly, one of the settings described in the Great Gatsby is the contrast of West and East Egg. The descriptions are highly symbolic and convey that the upper class of the society is lacking in morality and ethics because it has been corrupted by material wealth and power that comes from this wealth. In the novel, West Egg and its citizens represent the newly rich, while East Egg and its citizens represent the old aristocracy. East is symbolic of wealth and corruption, west of morality. In the story, east is symbolic of wealth and the corruption it causes. In the east, having money is having power, and that power corrupts. Indeed, in the east, few truly take responsibility for their actions. Early in the story, Jordan Baker is nearly suggested in the newspapers to have moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-finals of a golf tournament. Witnesses later said they might have been wrong, no doubt with the encouragement of Jordans money. Also, when Daisy ran into Myrtle, she didnââ¬â¢t stop the car. : In the corrupt East, people donââ¬â¢t take responsibility for their actions. The west, on the other hand, is symbolic for morality. The west was known for its values and its work ethic. Nick refers to the place as the warm center of the world. Nick later talks of the west as the place where ââ¬Å"houses are called by the name of the familyâ⬠. With all of its morality, the west was still unfashionable, people (eg. Gatsby and Nick) wanted to move to East Egg drawn by the wealth and care-free attitude. However, as Nick says, ââ¬Å"we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly inadaptable to Eastern life. This means that Nick and Gatsby will never get there because they lacked taste. Fitzgerald portrays the newly rich (west eggers) as being vulgar, gaudy, ostentatious, and lacking in social graces and taste. Gatsby, for example, lives in a monstrously ornate, gothic mansion, wears a pink suit, drives a Rolls-Royce, and does not pick up on subtle social signals, such as the insincerity of the Sloaneââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ invitation to lunch. In contrast, the old aristocracy (east eggers) possesses grace, taste, subtlety, and elegance, epitomized by the Buchananââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ tasteful home and the flowing white dresses of Daisy and Jordan Baker. What the old aristocracy possesses in taste, however, it seems to lack in heart, as the East Eggers prove themselves careless, inconsiderate bullies who are so used to moneyââ¬â¢s ability to ease their minds that they never worry about hurting others. The Buchananââ¬â¢s exemplify this stereotype when, at the end of the novel, they simply move to a new house far away rather than condescend to attend Gatsbyââ¬â¢s funeral. Gatsby, on the other hand, whose recent wealth derives from criminal activity, has a sincere and loyal heart, remaining outside Daisyââ¬â¢s window until four in the morning in Chapter VII simply to make sure that Tom does not hurt her. Ironically, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s good qualities (loyalty and love) lead to his death, as he takes the blame for killing Myrtle rather than letting Daisy be punished, and the Buchananââ¬â¢s bad qualities (fickleness and selfishness) allow them to remove themselves from the tragedy not only physically but psychologically. This shows that the upper class of the society has no morals or ethics because they have been corrupted with excessive materialistic wealth. This conveys the materialistic excesses the 1920s and the decline of the American dream. Secondly, the road from West Egg to New York City exemplifies decay. It is a valley of ashes, a place of uninterrupted desolation. It is where the rich dump their troubles and this conveys that the rich are immoral and unethical because theyââ¬â¢re living in luxury using the valley of ashes as a ââ¬Å"binâ⬠whilst the lower class people living in the valley are poor and living in poverty. It is described as; ââ¬Å"a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery airâ⬠(p. 27) The valley was first introduced in chapter 2. Described as a gloomy land created by the dumping of ââ¬Å"industrial ashes,â⬠the valley acquires a sense of decay. It seems as if the rich, men like Tom Buchanan and Gatsby dump their ââ¬Å"ashesâ⬠(their troubles) in the valley, with nothing but concern for themselves. This connects with the rest of the book, as Tom and Daisy are seen as a ââ¬Å"recklessâ⬠couple, and one that only care about themselves. The eyes of Dr. Eckleburg symbolize in this chapter advertising and materialism gone mad, one of the central themes of the plot. Fitzgeralds description of the drawbridge and passing barges makes an allusion to the River Styx, a mythological river which one crosses to enter the realm of the dead. This descriptions shows that this is a place of poverty and troubles where troubles ââ¬Å"dumpedâ⬠by the rich eggers to rot and die; the valley was the place of murder (Myrtle getting run over by Daisy, chapter 8). The murder was also the result of two rich men, Tom (had an affair with Myrtle) and Gatsby (let Daisy drive). So, the valley of ashes does in fact represent a place of decadence; a place where the rich dump their ââ¬Å"ashesâ⬠(or troubles). The novels only non-wealthy characters live in the valley of ashes; it is the grim underside to the self-indulgence of the Eggs, and of New York City. George Wilson, Myrtles dejected husband, seems almost already dead ââ¬Å"walking through her husband as if he were a ghost. â⬠(p. 28) and made of ashes: ashen dust veiled his dark suit and pale hair. This dust that is around and the fact that Wilson is ghostlike portrays how desolate and dead the valley of ashes is. Everything is grey and covered by ashes and in contrast to the rich vibrant colours in East and West Egg, the ââ¬Å"valley of ashesâ⬠can be seen as a very grim place where people live in poverty even though they live right next door to people with more wealth than th ey need (the eggers) This can be related back to the failure of the American dream because even though there is great wealth in the society, it has not been distributed evenly and people are still in poverty. Fitzgerald represents poverty as lying beneath wealth and providing the wealthy with a dumping ground. It is what the wealthy wish to avoid seeing at all costs. Through the descriptions of the ââ¬Å"valley of ashes,â⬠we see how immoral the rich upper class are to just dump their troubles there without thinking about what it might mean for the people living there. They are only caring about their personal comfort. Thirdly, through the descriptions made of Gatsby, we see the immorality of the society at the time through the illusion of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream and how the original spiritual aspect of the American dream has gone and made way for xcessive materialism. He stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he ha d vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness. (p. 16) In our first acquaintance with the green light, we see Gatsby reaching out for it, almost, in a way, worshipping it. We find out later that this green light is at the end of Daisys dock, and is a symbol for Gatsbys dream and the hope for the future. Green is the color of promise, hope, and renewal so it is fitting that Gatsbys dream of a future with Daisy be represented physically in the novel by this green light. Later, in the final chapter of this novel, Fitzgerald compares Gatsbys green light to the green breast of the new world (115), comparing Gatsbys dream of rediscovering Daisy to the explorers discovery of America and the promise of a new continent. However, Gatsbys dream is tarnished by his material possessions, ââ¬Å"the colossal significance of that green light had vanished forever,â⬠(p. 90) The means corrupt the end, and Gatsbys dream dies because of Daisy, Gatsby, and Toms carelessness and superficiality, as does Gatsby for the same reasons. At the end of the first chapter, we see Gatsby reaching out for the green light, a symbol for the hope and promise of the future, almost in the attitude of a worshiper. This is the first suggestion Fitzgerald gives us that Gatsbys quest for Daisy is more than just a physical endeavor, but a spiritual one as well. Also in this chapter, we see Gatsby, after the car accident, looking over Daisy from her yard, trying to protect her. His watch over her window is compared to a vigil, and while Nick talked to Gatsby that night, he sensed that his presence was ruining the sacredness of the moment. However, Gatsbys vigil was over nothing Daisy was never in her room that night much like Gatsbys dream is over a nonexistent person. The Daisy he met and fell in love with years ago is not the same person anymore, and as much as Gatsby thinks that he can repeat the past, in the real world it is proven to be impossible. On one level, Fitzgerald gives us Gatsbys dream as a spiritual quest, but on another level, we find out that this is yet another reason why his dream fails. His faith is misplaced, because the object of his quest is nothing more than Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby is also associated with moonlight/starlight and artificial light. For example when Jordan is talking about Gatsby with Nick, Gatsby is described as dispensing, ââ¬Å"starlight to casual moths,â⬠The starlight/moonlight is representative of the fantasy/illusion or unreachable quality of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream, this quote is saying that his dream is unreachable and doomed from the beginning because he wants Daisy (the ââ¬Å"casual mothâ⬠) who is attracted to artificial light which is representative of the material means that he hopes to attract Daisy. There is a lot of proof of this in chapter 5 when Daisy and Gatsby meet for the first time, Gatsby describes the front of his house as, ââ¬Å"catching the light,â⬠(p. 7) the front of his house faces Daisy so he is trying to attract Daisy with his vast material wealth which is represented by the artificial light. Fourthly, the descriptions of the Daisy convey an immoral and unethical judgment of the upper class in society by showing the shallowness, hollowness and idleness of them. These suggest the hollowness of Daisy Buchanan because although her voice and her stunning beauty draw people in. When they ââ¬Å"lean inâ⬠to hear what she actually has to say, they hear ââ¬Å"nothingâ⬠because she is empty and hollow. Also, a lot of Daisyââ¬â¢s descriptions are associated with white light. In the Great Gatsby, white represents emptiness or hollowness. This is associated with Daisy a lot because she is empty and hollow, for example Nick describes Daisy at Daisyââ¬â¢s house, ââ¬Å"They were both in white,â⬠(p. 13) and ââ¬Å"white dressesâ⬠(p. 17). Another theme that Daisy is associated with is materialistic wealth. For example, Nick says that, ââ¬Å"Her voice is full of money. â⬠(p. 115) She is attracted to money, she is not pure, she is yellow (has a dazzling appeal) eg. ââ¬Å"two rows of brass buttons on her dress gleamed in the sunlight. â⬠We see that the only reason that she is attracted to Gatsby is because of his great material wealth. We know this because Daisy tells Gatsby that he, ââ¬Å"resembles the advertisement of the man,â⬠(p. 114). This statement confirms that Daisy does not like Gatsby for himself, but for the wealth and superficial illusion he represents. Daisy is associated with darkness/twilight, for example she is at the beginning of the novel, she says ââ¬Å"why candles? â⬠and then, ââ¬Å"snapped them out with her fingers. â⬠(p. 17) also while Gatsby is watching for Daisy in case Tom acts violently to her, she, ââ¬Å"comes to the windowâ⬠¦then turned out the light. â⬠(p. 140) This is symbolic of Daisyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"snapping out,â⬠or destruction or Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream because she is turning off the light on Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream and not giving him a chance of fulfilling, therefore the dream is doomed from the start. Daisy is also representative of the American Dream and because she has snapped out the light on Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream, it shows the disintegration of the American Dream. This shows the immorality of Daisy who is representative of the upper class in society because she is so obsessed with materialistic aspect of the American dream rather than the spiritual aspect. Lastly, we can say that Tom Buchanan, who is another representative of the upper class, is also hollow because of the descriptions given of him. For example, at Tomââ¬â¢s house when Nick first goes over, he suddenly exclaims, ââ¬Å"If we donââ¬â¢t look out, the white race will be utterly submerged. Itââ¬â¢s scientific stuff; itââ¬â¢s been proved. â⬠(p. 18) This racism and utter nonsense shows the shallowness of Tom because not only does he make racist remarks, he doesnââ¬â¢t know what he is talking about when he says that, ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s been proven. â⬠Tomââ¬â¢s beliefs are hypocritical but lack moral caliber, compassions and idealism. In the same section, Tom is described as, ââ¬Å"hovering restlessly around the room,â⬠(p. 15). This shows like Daisy, he seems to want to do something but is unsure of what to do. Also, we notice that Tom is associated with words of movement (ââ¬Å"shifting and moved by ââ¬Å") and this can again be seen in relation to Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s description of him and his wife as wealthy drifters. What is interesting about Tomââ¬â¢s cruel body is that normally cruel is referred to a person and not to a body. Fitzgerald doesnââ¬â¢t write that Tom is cruel but that his body is cruel, suggesting problematically a separation between his body and his character, as if Tomââ¬â¢s cruel sensuality may assert itself despite his will. The fact that Tomââ¬â¢s cruel body comes so close in the text to the description of his muscles almost bursting through his clothes suggests that the purely animal, physical part of his nature (his cruel body) is capable of bursting out instinctively at any moment, as indeed it does. In fact Tom bruises Daisyââ¬â¢s finger and breaks Myrtle Wilsonââ¬â¢s nose in a rage. This shows the hollowness of Tom because he canââ¬â¢t control his violence or actions. Tom never considers living up to the standards he expects of people around him. For example, he doesnââ¬â¢t want Gatsby to take Daisy away from him going to great length to ââ¬Å"investigate him,â⬠while he is oblivious to the double standard in his practice of maintaining sexual relationships with other women, like Myrtle. Therefore, Tom has values, but theyââ¬â¢re conveniences, easily disposed of as the whim takes him and he is only physically powerful. The use of cardboard cut-outs to play the role of the Queen bee in the mating scene avoids any level of eroticism in the scene. This and the use of clinical language helps to remind the viewer that what they are watching is a documentary, not a joke or a spoof short film as it can at times feel. There is much that could be done to m ake this film feel more professional and scientific, even if the purpose of the films is to reach a general audience. This film seems to lack a professional touch that would make it believable and credible to the average movie-goer. However, despite any other possible failings of her films, Rossellini definitely manages to be different from most insect and animal life documentaries. It is certainly more interesting and more entertaining than most films I have seen in the documentary genre. Strange as this movie may seem to the viewer, it does succeed in making the honey bee mating practices unforgettable. I will never now be able to remove the image of the actor portraying the male bee, bleeding to death from his groin as the cardboard Queen flies away with a large stick, representing the male's severed penis, jammed through "her" body. Nor will I be able to forget the image of the cubes of red Jell-o, representing the royal jelly, being offered to a small baby wrapped in a blanket, representing the larval Queen. While the biological informational content of the entire video is rather low, it succeeds in its fundamental purpose: providing an audience made up of non-scientifically-educated adults with basic knowledge of bees and their life cycle. Another documentary in the ââ¬Å"Green Pornoâ⬠series, on praying mantis mating habits, uses a similar costume design style, but also added in some interesting color and light effects to focus the viewer's attention on the narrator's voice instead of the actual speaker. This video features a model of a praying mantis built of paper or cardboard that resembles an origami sculpture. The general feel of this video is one of simplicity, rather than the previous documentary's cheap feel, though the cheesy effect remains to a certain extent. The video is extremely short and fast, probably to imitate the mating habits of the subject species in question. It exemplifies the life span of the male praying mantis, that he ex ists only to copulate with the female and to feed her so she will bear his young. The video, his life, and the time period of the actual mating all exist only briefly. Again, the level of scientific knowledge imparted by this video is low but functional. Horror Women Clover How has the role of women in horror films changed? Using Carol Clover, ââ¬ËTheory of Final Girl to analyse 1 scene from ââ¬ËThe Hitcher, the changing roles of women in horror films will be explored. Traditionally horror films have seen women take on the role of the victim. More recently this has changed whereby theà women has taken on a more powerful and dominant position. ââ¬ËCarol Clover a professor of film wrote a book called ââ¬ËMen, Women and Chainsaw: gender and the modern horror film which focused on women. She developed a theory, which changed the way gender is looked upon in horror films. In a lot of ââ¬Ëslasher films the women are represented as victims although what interested me is how the womens role has changed in recent years to what ââ¬ËCarol Clover claimed to be the ââ¬Ëfinal girl. Women have been subject to different representations throughout time, within the horror genre; of which female audience consider being a sexist image. I will be exploring how women are represented in the films mentioned, analysing the scenes and comparing this to Carol Clover, and how the roles of women have changed through time. To do this I will look at ââ¬ËThe Hitcher a 2007 remake (Michael Bay production) (Director Dave Meyer) which presents a clear representation of the ââ¬Ëfinal girl. Grace Andrews (Sophia Bush) and Jim Halsey (Zachary Knighton) decide to hit the road for spring break. However the film turns from a chick flick to the two of them fighting for their lives and trying to save others. The 1986 original is some what different from the remake where there is no final girl and the boyfriend is the only survivor. Dave Meyers wanted to create ââ¬Ëfemale empowerment which is an added twist to the remake. Female empowerment is also demonstrated in a film series called ââ¬ËSaw. Directed by James Wan, the plot revolves around ââ¬ËJigsaw Killer who kidnaps his victims, put them in traps and gives them a chance to repent from their previous lifestyle in which they took for granted. One victim from Saw named ââ¬ËAmanda Young (Shawnee Smith) survives the trap and becomes ââ¬ËJigsaw Killer partner. ââ¬ËAmanda is a heroin addict which she started while in prison. She is ââ¬ËJigsaws only known survivor and believes it has made her a better person. This film clearly displays the female role changing from victim to survivor although this film goes against the theory of Carol Clover, in terms that ââ¬ËAmanda becomes a murderer. Women throughout horror film history have been stereotyped to victimisation and the focus of brutal murder. History has seen change from women not being able to vote to having basic human rights and a high status in society. Feminists have come along way to changing this stereotype, this being, able to direct films and having the chance to control a piece of media which affects the way people (women) are perceived by an audience. (Bridget (1999) ââ¬Å"Without feminism there would have been no final girl or avenging womenâ⬠. This quote shows that even though films such as ââ¬ËThe Hitcher or ââ¬ËScream were not writen, directed or produced by women, feminism has come a long way where women have more power in soceity and is being portrayed in films just as Dave Meyers wanted to create. This is to do with social change. According to film maker magazine blog, women are now attending the cinema to watch horror films more and are exceeding male figures. Carol Clover questioned who the audience identifies them with. It is assumed that the male identifies with murderer who is usually male. Many argue that men in the audience are sexually aroused by the victimisation of the female. This is caused by the camera angles and lighting. Murder of the female if shot from the mens point of view ââ¬ËGaze Shot (masculine voyeur vs feminine victim). Carol Clover argues that the audience identifies with ââ¬Ëfinal girl, and that the viewer (male or female) identifies with the fright of being attacked rather than the satisfaction of the murderer as he attacks. The final girl remains ââ¬Ëvirginal and ââ¬Ëpure while her friends do the opposite. She escapes because she does not partake in adult hood such as drugs, and sexual intercourse. The final girl fights back and is the damsel in distress. The unempowered woman makes a movement to power over men. In order to compare Carol Clovers theory to ââ¬ËThe Hitcher I shall look at 2 scenes from The Hitcher. The first scene opens and the viewer sees Grace (Sophie Bush) and Jim (Zachary Knighton) walk to a motel. There, they take a shower together and Jim steps out of the room to make a phone call, telling her that he will be gone for 15 minutes. Hes gone for several hours and Grace falls asleep watching a Hitchcock film. She is then awakened by someone in the bed who is feeling her up. She assumes it is Jim but then sees that it is Ryder (Sean Bean) trying to rape her. She tries to push him away, but Ryder gets on top of her. We see his hand over her mouth trying to stop her screaming. The camera shot is high angle which is used to make her look vulnerable and powerless. We see her bite Ryder hand and he hits her. The shot is then focused from Grace Eyes also known as point of view shot. When the low angle shot is used it emphasises the power and strength that Ryder has being on top of her. Throughout the scene a master shot is applied whereby the director cut from Ryder to Grace and back to Ryder throughout most of the scene. This showed the reaction of the two characters and established a clear spatial (space) and temporal (time) relationship. The audience then sees Grace grab the phone on the side table, of which she then hits him over the head and tries to get off the bed. Grace hits him over the head with the lamp she picks up from the floor and runs to the bathroom. Grace is trying to shut the door and the camera is focused mainly on her. Here a Close up is used. This is to draw the viewer/audience closer and involve them in what is happening. The close up shot also enables the audience to observe the reactions of Ryder and the emotions of Grace. There are two sorts of lighting being displayed in the scene; these are artificial and key light. The artificial lighting is low key to create a slight shadow on Ryder to make him seem dark and mysterious just as his character is portrayed throughout the film. The key lighting was needed as the scene was shot in the bathroom where there is no natural light available. Grace manages to close the door as she reaches for a gun and Ryder walks out of the room. She then makes her way to find Jim who she sees tied up between two trucks of which is stretching Jim every time Ryder accelerates. Throughout the whole of the last scene you see her fight for her life and she survives but she becomes extremely weak in this next scene when Jims life is on the line. Ryder keeps hitting the gas, brutally hurting Jim and tells Grace to get in and close the door. Grace begs and pleas with Ryder to stop and begins to cry but asks him questions such as what do you want and calls him sick. Her character changes from being strong to being very weak. Ryder says he cant stop and he wants to die. Here the theory of Carol Clover audience identification takes place. The close up shot enables the audience to identify with him or her and clearly the director wanted the scene to be focused on the audience identifying with the female. When focusing on editing of the scene there is a lot of cuts from Grace to Ryder and a two shot in between, this is often used when two people are in conversation. When counting the cut shots, when focused on Ryder they add up to less than 30 while the shots focused on Grace are over 30. The cops show up and see Grace with Ryder at gunpoint. They tell her to drop the gun, but Ryder tells Grace not to listen to them. Ryder then tells her to point the gun between his eyes. Grace cant do it so Ryder does it for her. Ryder then tells her to shoot him, but she cant, puts the gun down and says for Ryder not to hurt Jim. Grace shows a sign of femininity whereby she becomes very emotional and shows how much she cares for Jim Throughout the scene the audience can hear Jim moaning and groaning in agony. Ryder then gets impatient and snatches the gun out of her hands. He then mutters under his breath, Useless waste. There is a FX sound effect where the audience can hear a ââ¬Ësplat where the blood explodes outwards to make the audience feel as thought they are the experiencing what has just happened to the victim (Jim). Although there is more to this than blood and emotion that makes the scene work, if she shoots him the foot will come off the brake and he will die and if she doesnt he puts his foot on the accelerator and Jim will die. Its a no win situation making you wonder what will be her decision. At the end of the film Grace does shoot and kill Ryder. Before hand Ryder smiles and asks Grace if it feels good. Grace tells him she doesnt feel a thing shoots him and walks away. The analysis has made the theory of Carol Clover more clear in terms of audience identification. Who does the audience identify with and why, are questions Clover asked when watching the slasher films. According to her theory, Carol said that audience identification was down to gender fluidity whereby the male killer was sexually repressed and therefore the male viewer could not identify themselves with them. For example: films such as Halloween, Psycho and Nightmare on Elmstreet, all the killers are sexually repressed and having something wrong mentally. Freddy Kruger (Nightmare on Elmstreet) was the result of him being brutally raped, and ââ¬ËHalloween was in response to his sister indulging in adulthood. However Ryder is not sexually repressed. Here her theory does not work. I believe that the camera shots and cuts affect who the audience is ââ¬Ëforced to identify with. The audience (male) was being made to identify themselves with the female (Grace). Whereby there were more cuts of her, the audience had no choice but to see her emotion and hear her plea. At times Grace was isolated and alone making the audience only identify with the character they are being shown. I also feel as though the male audience identifies with Grace rather than Ryder because he lacks masculinity and deep down is weak as I will explain. Many times Ryder says he wants to die and for them to kill him as he cant do it himself. He makes Grace strong enough to kill him by killing others. However its always a no win situation. It is as if he doesnt want to die alone and is scared. The analysis above demonstrates a no win situation. Eric Red (director is ââ¬ËHitcher 1986) talks about the film in 1986 and states that, ââ¬Å"Because of the hell living inside his skin, John Ryder wants to die. But he wants to make Jim Halsey strong enough to kill him and he does.â⬠(Eric Red Interview) In the 2007 remake, Grace is made strong enough to do this. There is a connection between her and the killer just like there was a connection between Jim and Ryder in the original Eric Red says, ââ¬Å"I really think that this strange psychological connection between The Hitcher and the Kid, the irony that something of value is passed from this horrific guy Ryder to Halsey, strength to persevere in a nightmarish worldâ⬠(Eric Red Interview) Looking closely at the film, it has made me has made me think about the narrative structure and that although the target victim in cab scene was not a girl; Ryder used Jim to get to Grace. Ryder was making Grace even more vulnerable and weak by taking away the man (protector) of her. She proved her weakness by not shooting Ryder and letting her boyfriend (Jim) die. This causes the narrative to move on and have Grace as Ryders last victim and for her to be the avenging women/ final girl. The audience does not need to know the killer past, but here the killer is trying to pass what he does and what he feels onto someone else so they can kill as well. This also happens in Saw. Amanda takes on the role of Jigsaw. Ryder many times says he wants to die and for them to kill him, but its always a no win situation. It is as if he doesnt want to die alone. For example the analysis shown above demonstrates a no win situation. Moving on, Clover argued that the final girl fights back just as Grace is doing. Grace is the one who sees everyone die. ââ¬Å"Final Girl is chased cornered, wounded; whom we see scream, stager, and fall, rise, and scream again. She alone looks death in the face, but she alone also finds the strength either to stay with the killer long enough to be rescued (ending A) or to kill him herself (ending B)â⬠. (Screams Of Terror) The two different endings are due to the evolution of feminist movement in film. If we look back at one of the first Final Girl films such as in Psycho, Lila figures out the unknown and when Bates attacks her, she is not given the chance to fight back as she is almost immediately rescued. This is ending A. Halloween, Laurie, was the first final girl to fight back (Ending B). Hitcher has ending B whereby the female (Grace) has empowerment to kill Ryder and to be just as strong as a male. This is where gender fluidity of the final girl plays its part. This enables the final girl to be identified by the male audience. She is not too feminine but has masculine traits such as being brave, intellectual and strong. The Final Girl is the one to make it to the end of the film. However I feel as though that her theory has left out an important thought that females can be crazy and psychotic as men. ââ¬ËUrban Legend, ââ¬ËFriday the 13th and ââ¬ËMay show that females can be serial killers too. I feel as though her theory is one sided. ââ¬ËUrban legend is the result of her boyfriend dying due to few girls carrying out an urban myth. The killer in ââ¬ËFriday the 13th is revealed as a middle-aged woman whose son, Jason, drowned years earlier as a consequence of negligence on the part of the camp counselors. The women in these films commit each murder as an act of revenge. However ââ¬ËMay just like the male according to Clover theory is also sexually dysfunctional. ââ¬ËMay doesnt understand how to react around others and this frightens people, so the only way she can keep them in her life is by killing them and keeping parts of them to make a ââ¬Ëbig doll. The big doll wont even leave her as a doll isnt real. The Evil Eye Edgar Allen Poe shows us the dark part of human kind. Conflict with in ones self, state of madness, and emotional break down all occur within this short story. The narrator of the story is a mad man that is haunted by his idea that the old man has an evil eye. Through the first person narrator, Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s "The Tell-Tale Heart" illustrates how manââ¬â¢s imagination is capable of being so vivid that it profoundly affects peopleââ¬â¢s lives. The manifestation of the narratorââ¬â¢s imagination unconsciously plants seeds in his mind, and those seeds grow into an unmanageable situation for which there is no room for reason and which culminates in murder. The fixation on the old manââ¬â¢s vulture-like eye forces the narrator to concoct a plan to eliminate the old man. The narrator confesses the sole reason for killing the old man is his eye. The narrator begins his tale of betrayal by trying to convince the reader he is not insane, but the reader quickly surmises the narrator indeed is out of control. The fact that the old manââ¬â¢s eye is the only motivation to murder proves the narrator is so mentally unstable that he must search for justification to kill. In his mind, he rationalizes murder with his own unreasonable fear of the eye. Though the passage I have selected is short, I believe it is the most obvious indication to the main theme of the book, as well as a common goal for not only Duddy Kravitz, but countless others, fictitious and not. I could have chosen a longer quotation from the book, but I felt that this phrase clearly communicates to the reader that the "American Dream" has been a preoccupation with Duddy since he was very young. Duddy's grandfather acted as a prominent father figure to him during his early childhood, when his father could not always be there for him, and as a result of always having him around while Duddy was so young and impressionable, he had a lot of influence on Duddy's developing mind. Coming from someone in such a position at that point in Duddy's life, a statement like "a man without land is nothing", has a particularly strong effect. The words themselves are very blunt and closed to interpretation. He wasn't simply telling him it would be nice to own property, his grandfather was telling him he will never have amounted to anything in his eyes, unless he owns land.
